SAVECO, a leading supplier of industrial and municipal wastewater treatment, farming, and biogas solutions, is reporting unprecedented success within the US Market for one of its product innovations. UK Municipal Wastewater Sector Manager Craig Webb describes the innovation as a “gamechanger for how we will treat sludge going forward”. The product in question is SAVECO’s VFA DM Septage Receiving Station – nicknamed by their sales team as the “Beast”.

The “Beast” screens, washes, conveys, and dewaters screenings in all one unit, thus eliminating the need for multiple pieces of equipment. Webb adds, “SAVECO has been working tirelessly to expose the VFA Sludge ‘Beast’ to the UK Market. As it has taken the States by storm there is no reason why this should not be the case over here. And as predicted, it was only a matter of time before the ‘Beast’ would be considered a viable option for how we treat sludge over this side of the pond”.

To back up this claim, SAVECO’s sales team report having advanced discussions with a range of leading water utilities looking to permanently install the VFA Sludge “Beast” across multiple sites. To date, there is a competitive race among four companies to secure the first UK-based reference site. Webb continues: “Following months of discussions with key decision makers, we have earned their trust and confidence to remedy an existing site sludge problem, which their current setup is unable to cope with.”

For the first reference site, the customer will be provided with a skid mounted, VFA1400 which can cope with 200 m3/h and up to 6-8% solids as a plug-and-play system that will also include a control panel.

Handling both indigenous and imported sludge demands, the “Beast” enables robust, streamlined, and efficient asset management across a treatment plant – allowing effluent to be put directly through the machine and avoiding any further stress on the existing plant. With efficient asset management comes significant operational cost savings and Webb recalls a recent conversation with a client that stated this could potentially save “thousands”.

In practice, this means that the septage tanker would be connected to the “Beast” through a Perrot joint. The tanker truck starts unloading the sludge into the station. The liquid is then conveyed to the purification process while solid waste is withheld, washed, and compacted inside the station.

The VFA DM Septage Receiving Station is also equipped with an integrated perforated plate VSA Drum Screen which washes, conveys, and dewaters wastewater screenings. Both the screen basket and dewatering zone are self-cleaning. Rotating around its axis, the cylindrical filter conveys the screenings into a loading hopper placed in the centre. A set of spray nozzles washes the filter during operation. A screw, placed inside the conveying pipe, with its top inside the discharge hopper, conveys the screenings towards the following treatment stages during which organic substances are washed out. Subsequently, solids are compacted and dewatered in the compacting and drainage area. Finally, solids are discharged through a discharge chute.

Further research gathered from SAVECO’s States-based customers indicate they’re benefiting from a range of customised features including:

  • Dual Motor Drive system powered by independent drum and auger speeds
  • Availability in 3 sizes
  • Max Flow rates of up to 200 m3/h
  • Drum Screen 5 to 6mm perforation
  • Drum Screen incline angle of 25 degrees
  • Connectable via Perrot to tankers or pipes.
  • Optimised cleaning
